Distribution - Greece

The actual total population size of the chamois in Greece is unknown. It is estimated that throughout mainland Greece there are around 2,000 chamois, which are distributed in 6 geographical units (population groups), in which they form about 30 distinct populations.

The six geographical units that maintain chamois population groups in our country are:

  • Northern Pindos mountain range with 11 main populations,
  • Central & Southern Pindos mountain range with 6 main populations,
  • Mountains of Roumeli with 7 main populations,
  • Olympus with 1 population,
  • Wider area of Rhodope-Falacro mountain range with 4 main populations,
  • Mountains of Northern-Northwestern borders with 1 main population.
