The significance of the “Chamois” app and the role of citizens

The Balkan chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) is one of the 10 subspecies of chamois in Europe and Western Asia. It displays a fragmented pattern of geographical distribution across various mountains of mainland Greece. An essential element for its existence is the presence of cliffs, where it seeks refuge for protection. In summer, it is usually found at high altitudes, while in winter, it is found at lower elevations.

It is a rare and protected species under both Greek and European law. It is threatened by poaching and various other human activities and interventions (such as road construction, wind farms, mass tourism, mining, etc.).

This application, named “Chamois,” offers the opportunity for all of you who frequently visit the mountains for recreation or work to contribute to the study and protection of this rare species.

How?

By recording your own observations of chamois with the app, you strengthen the unique database related to the study of the ecology, geographical distribution, and use of ecological corridors by populations of this protected species. The database is managed by expert scientists with long experience in chamois conservation.

Download the app and become part of the great effort to protect this remarkable hoofed mammal of our country’s mountains!
