The “Chamois” Project

The action “Enhancing the Connectivity of Balkan Chamois in Northwestern Greece (PONT Focus Region)” aims to ensuring the unobstructed

movement and communication of Balkan chamois populations (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) in Northwestern Greece.

Towards this aim, the three main actions are

  • Determining the distribution pattern and ecological corridors connecting Balkan chamois populations’ range areas and preparing a
    Management Plan.
  • Identifying threats and pressures negatively affecting the use of ecological corridors by Balkan chamois.
  • Promoting cooperation among stakeholders and local groups in the project area, including the Greece-Albania cross-border zone.

The action “Enhancing the Connectivity of Balkan Chamois in Northwestern Greece (PONT Focus Region)” (acronym “Chamois”) is
being implemented by “Pindos Perivallontiki,” the Biodiversity Conservation Lab of the Department of Biological Applications and Technology at
the University of Ioannina, the “Balkan Chamois Society,” and “Schima Coop”.

The action is financially supported by the “Prespa Ohrid Nature Trust – PONT” and the “A.G. Leventis Foundation.”
