The Chamois is a protected species according to the Bern Convention (Convention on the Conservation of European Wildlife and Natural Habitats), which was signed in 1979 by the member states of the Council of Europe. In this convention, the Chamois is included in Appendix III.
Additionally, the Balkan subspecies is included in the EU Directive 92/43 “On the conservation of natural habitats and of wild fauna and flora.” Specifically, the Balkan Chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra balcanica) is listed in Appendix II (Species of Community interest whose conservation requires the designation of special areas of conservation) and Appendix IV (Species of Community interest in need of strict protection) of the EU Directive 92/43.
As a result of the above, the Balkan Chamois is included in the corresponding Appendices II and IV of the Joint Ministerial Decision 33318/3028/1998 {Determination of measures and procedures for the conservation of natural habitats (ecosystems) and wild fauna and flora}, which incorporated the EU Directive 92/43 into Greek national legislation.
Finally, hunting of the Chamois been prohibited in Greece since 1969, under Law 86/69, concerning the Forest Code (Article 258, Section 1D).
