Project Area

The intervention area is the mountains of Northwestern Greece, from Mitsikeli in the south to the Prespa lakes in the north (Pindos-Prespa Conservation Connectivity area – PONT Focus Region).

These mountains contain significant habitats for the Balkan chamois, hosting over one-third of the species population in the country.

In this area, Balkan chamois can be found on Mount Tymfi and the two gorges of Aoos and Vikos, Mount Smolikas, Mount Voio, Valia Calda, and others. Additionally, some populations of the species are found in the cross-border zone with neighbouring Albania (Grammos, Nemertsika) and use suitable habitats on both sides of the border.
